A Compelling Read or the Perfect Gift...
What it’s like to fly combat jets
down between the trees.

Whether you have ever flown a jet, or just wished to do so, and whether you served in Vietnam or just read about it, you will be riveted by this fast-paced and vivid account in prose and poetry that tells the story of a special breed of men. These were the hand-picked few who led death-defying lives as F-100 Super Sabre pilots. "Songs" tells the story of the "Hun Drivers" in war and peace, who flew low and fast between the trees with troops under fire day or night, or spent weeks away from home and family on nuclear alert, hoping that the red phone that signaled WW III would never ring. Their plane was called “The Widow Maker” for good reason, as you soon learn.

Songs From A Distant Cockpit puts you in the cockpit and in among these single-seat, single-engine fighter pilots as they trained in the “most dangerous plane ever built.” It brings you along as they learned how to fly it, and how to survive in it, and the sudden risks and terrors that they faced often as they flew it. If you’ve ever wondered "What it's like to fly a close-air-support fighter bombers" in combat in Vietnam, or on other missions that pushed the ragged edges of the flight envelope, with Death an all-too-frequent wingman, then you’ll have a vivid understanding when you read "Songs."

This highly acclaimed book uses on-the-scene, at-the-time prose and poetry in a blend said by historians to be unique in books about combat in its ability to capture the feelings and experiences shared by those who took pride in their ability to fly “the Hun.” These men were few in number, because, with rare exception, only top pilots could become F-100 Super Sabre pilots. Many were the sights they saw, the things they felt, and the terrors that visited so suddenly, when Death came calling−but left again as suddenly, without a "customer." What they, and the author, have most in common to this day is that they all enjoyed their "Songs" in distant cockpits, high above, or down so low, so fast, so far away, that only God could find them.

Men and women from all walks of life are saying, "I couldn't put it down," and some add that parts of it "brought them to tears." So, satisfy your yearnings to fly because now it's time for YOU to get in that fighter cockpit and go flying through the bullets and down between the trees!

Songs From A Distant Cockpit eBook John Schulz

Having been a crew chief on F100s at Bien Hoa, I know some of what John Schultz has relayed to be quite accurate. I didn't see things from the perspective of the pilots, but I was, and am, proud to have worked on the 'lead sleds'.
(Having to change a tail hook shoe would sometimes earn a case of beer for the crew chief!)
I was honored to feed the python once!

Songs From A Distant Cockpit eBook John Schulz Reviews

I was a high school team-mate of both John and his younger brother, Frank and also spent much of my career living, working and studying in Europe, Asia and, more recently, in Latin America.
I thought that John's memoir was a terrific weaving of prose & poetry that clearly describes the growth of his character. From the "toughness" of the athletic fields to the"bravery" of combat flying to the more philosophical treatment of the "uselessness" of both personal conflict and war, John has laid out a very compelling story.

I just want to clarify that while the review says it's from Nancy, since I am the registered member, my husband, Dick, read the book and wrote the review. You probably figured that out when the review said that I had played football with the author's brother - my husband was the football player!
The title should have been, "Songs surrounded by Doggerel, Doggerel, and more Doggerel." If there had been a review written as to the true content, I would never have bought this book. I thought the book was poorly written and poorly presented. Never again anything by this author. ...
as a former AF flight instructor I enjoyed the description of USAF flight school and what it was like to be a flight instructor for new
AF officers. But this book has something for everyone AF flying, AF flying in Viet Nam- close air support within country, wives of AF pilots both during Viet Nam and currently, non-combat AF flying, Vietnam correspondents and a broad selection of poetry on each of these topics, great even if you do not like poetry. Recommended.
SONGS FROM A DISTANT COCKPIT is simply an incomparable literary work. John Schulz shares more than his Vietnam experience as a fighter pilot. He gives the reader a peak into his fellow pilot's souls by animating their passion and defining their character, as each dangerous sortie becomes a deadly daily routine. He daringly weaves his story, choreographed with poetry, personal letters, and fascinating details of the operations. Schulz is inspiring, entertaining and contemplative. A must read !!! The best books about Flying the F-100 I have read. Early models of the Super Sabre were hard to fly and 47 of the first F-100's were lost in accidents. In 1954 the Collier Trophy awarded to North American Aviation for the development of the development of the first operational supersonic fighter. Looking back, the F-100 was delivered and accepted by the Air Force before it was safe to fly.

John Shulz captures the mystique of the F-100 better than any author.

This is a book for every aviator...Schulz writes a compelling story in text and prose...I was a short timer and while checking out in the Hun I received orders to fill a slot 58th FBW in Korea in F-86's.... much of what Schulz writes of the Hun I found in the Sabre. Five Stars to a great aviation writer. I have never written to an author on a book. I will write one to Schulz. Cheers, 1/Lt Mik Kranz, 69th FBS Osan 1956-57
A most interesting read. I flew 225 B-52 missions in 'Nam all of which were prior to Linebacker I or II in what was a relatively "safe" FL320 environment. Not so for the Hun drivers, the Misty pilots and so many others in various airplanes. Some of these fast mover crew members were/are my classmates and/or other valued friends. This book gave me an added appreciation of the valor, dedication and sacrifice of my brothers in arms as well as a different aspect of the air war in Vietnam. I also enjoyed the poetry included in this novel. A hearty "well-done" to John Schultz!
